We honour the memory of Dr Janet Lanyon

We honour the life and legacy of Dr Janet Lanyon, Senior Lecturer in the School of the Environment at The University of Queensland, whose distinguished career was defined by exceptional contributions to marine biology, zoology, and marine mammal conservation.

Dr Lanyon will be remembered as an outstanding marine biologist and conservation scientist whose research advanced our understanding of dugongs and other marine mammals. Over decades of research, Dr Lanyon made significant contributions to the population ecology, genetics, physiology, functional morphology, and health of dugongs, while also advancing knowledge of coastal dolphin ecology.  Her vision and dedication led to the establishment of a long-term research program on wild dugongs in Moreton Bay, which has provided invaluable insights into their biology, health, and conservation. This enduring program remains an important scientific resource for current and future generations of researchers.

Dr Lanyon’s influence extended far beyond her scientific achievements. She was a dedicated educator, generous mentor, and valued collaborator who inspired students, colleagues, and volunteers through her intellectual curiosity, kindness, and unwavering commitment to scientific excellence. Her extensive body of scholarship included major contributions to the CMS report A Global Assessment of Dugong Status and Conservation Needs (2025), the most comprehensive global update on the status and conservation needs of dugongs in over two decades. She also authored A Guide to the Identification of Seagrasses in the Great Barrier Reef (1986), among numerous other publications. Her work represents a significant scholarly contribution to marine mammal science and conservation, reflecting decades of research, discovery, and dedication.

Dr Lanyon leaves an enduring mark on marine biology and wildlife science through the knowledge she generated, the conservation initiatives she advanced, and the many scientists she mentored. She will be remembered not only for her scientific achievements but also for her generosity, integrity, and the profound influence she had on colleagues, students, and the broader marine science community.
